Customer Service at a Bazaar

I was at a bazaar quite recently and was interested in some clothes for kids. I chanced upon this stall where the items where wrapped individually in plastic.

The clothes were cute and I had a long list of godchildren to buy clothes for. During the first few minutes I was at the stall though, I knew this stall was not going to make a sale.

As sales people selling products, what must we remember?

1. Know your product: I was asking about what ages each size would be for. For example, an S (or small) would fit what age? They didn’t know.

2. Help your customer choose. : I personally do not like “pushy salespeople” — those who bother you at every turn or even before you actually need them but I would want assistance when I need it. As the goods were individually wrapped in their plastic bags, it was so hard to inspect them — to see if they were alright, to see if the design was nice. I actually opened up some of the plastic myself and didn’t feel any assistance from the two people who were manning the booth. Bottom-line, I felt as if the owners of the stall didn’t want the customer to look through their goods at all. Since they weren’t exerting enough effort to help me choose, I walked away.

I moved on to two other stalls where those managing the stalls were friendly and very helpful. I bought a ton of clothes! Well, that is the best way to reward good customer service or to penalize those who do not give the customer any service at all. As I always say, vote with your wallet!
