Customer Service: Powerbooks Versus Best Sellers

I like going to bookstores. The only things that keep me from buying more books than I already have would be: my budget; the amount of space I have in which to store my books; and the fact that a day only has 24 hours. Telling me that I will be visiting a bookstore or will be going to book fair is already cause for joy.

That’s why I’m glad that bookstores in Manila have come a long way from before. My favorites, these days, are Powerbooks and Best Sellers, largely due to convenience and proximity. I like the way the bookstores are set up and I also enjoy their wide collection of books.

Customer service-wise, though, in my personal experience, Powerbooks seems to go the extra mile compared to Best Sellers. Only quite recently, I was looking for the book: “Why Good Things Happen to Good People.” I checked at both Powerbooks Shangrila Mall and at Best Sellers in Robinsons Galleria. The staff at Powerbooks were quicker to search for it and while Best Sellers told me that the book was out of stock, the staff at Powerbooks got my contact number and searched for the book in other branches. They found one copy in Greenbelt, had it delivered to the Shangri-la branch and I picked up and paid for the book there.

It was not only on that one occasion. Every time I ask Powerbooks for a certain book, they are quick to ask if you would like them to place an order for you just in case they do not have it. They are so focused on getting you to order and to buy which is not bad at all. For what is customer service all about — but getting to the customer what he or she needs or wants with the least effort.

So the next time I find myself looking for a book that is not readily available, guess who will be top of mind?
