Filipino Lesson 1: Introducing Yourself

Today, I begin a series which will hopefully help parents teach their kids Filipino. Whatever I write down here, I will also use to teach my 9-year old son. Please bear with me as I intend to build this page over time. Hopefully, by the time this year is over, we would have covered a lot of ground.

We begin today by focusing on “introducing yourself” or “pagpapakilala sa sarili.” In whatever situation we find ourselves, the first thing that we always need to do is to tell the other person who we are. Here are the things our kids should be able to say or understand:

Ano ang iyong pangalan?
What is your name?

Ako ay si Juan de la Cruz.
I am Juan de la Cruz.

Ilang taon ka na?
How old are you?

Ako ay siyam na taong gulang.
I am nine years old.

Saan ka nag-aaral?
Where do you study?

Ako ay nag-aaral sa La Salle.
I study in La Salle.

Anong baitang ka na?
What grade are you in?

Ako ay nasa ikatlong baitang.
I am in Grade 3.

Saan ka nakatira?
Where do you live?

Ako ay nakatira sa Quezon City.
I live in Quezon City.

Next, we shall be tackling “Parts of the Body” or “Mga Bahagi ng katawan.” Stay tuned.
