How to Teach Your Kids Tips (Part 2)

We continue with some of the things we picked up from the talk of educator Vicky Tantoco:

4. Focus on effort rather than ability. – When helping your child learn, there will, of course, be occasions, when his or her performance will not be up to par or will not meet your expectations. In such situations, the best thing to do is to discuss things with your child but be sure to never put your child down by saying things like: “Bobo ka talaga.” (You are really dumb.) Just emphasize that he or she did not exert enough effort or probably did not spend enough time reviewing.

5. Encourage your child with your own successes. - Do you want your kids to share their stories with you? Then share stories with them too. Talk about your promotion at work or how you handled a really difficult project. Not only may you share your successes with them, I personally think that it would also be good to share some of your problems and failures too, to the extent that they can already understand what you will tell them. It will make you, as a parent, appear more human. In this way, your kid will learn that everyone has good and bad days.

6. Remain loving all the time. – As parents, it is our duty to love our children no matter what. Parents love their kids unconditionally. So whether your kid gets low or high grades, be loving to them. This will help them understand that you will be there for them all the time.
