RED and Write
Most people go to school to learn to read and write. If you want to write though, whether for fun or professionally, you can just think about the color RED:
Read: Read a wide variety of books and magazines, from classics to even trashy stuff. Exposing yourself to such materials can help you pick up new things and ideas and will help you learn new styles of writing. Just as it is important to read good writers to learn how to write, you can also learn about what to avoid by reading anything and everything!
Experience: Go around. Meet people. Try out new things, new places. Any place, any time is a good source of data and information. You must just know how to recognize what might be useful for you and your readers. Writing a novel? What did that quirky aunt of yours say before? Dishing out tips on how to write a resume? What were you thinking as you reviewed that last applicant’s curriculum vitae? Start right where you are. You’d be surprised at how much material you have just from being yourself and living your “regular” life.
Do: Grab that pen and notebook. Update your blog. E-mail your thoughts and opinions to friends. Write letters to the editors. Writing is just something that needs to be done.
So, when you want to write, think RED and may you be able to ignite new thoughts and spark ideas.
